I had looked INTENTLY at this last night . http://www.ebay.com/itm/1932-D-Wash...047675.l2557 This was a far higher grade than what's in the album. There was just something about this that had me a little worried, seller rating, coin just looked too perfect to have not been graded. I've never been good enough to tell about previous cleanings either. I would have bid, though not near the selling price. What are your thoughts?

I wouldnt have touched that listing with a ten foot poll.
Id never buy a 32d for that amount of money ungraded for starters, but then throw on the fact that the seller is subbing his fingers all over a coin thats supposed to still have luster according to the listing. Thats enough right there to keep me away without even really examining the coin itself

Just the way he is holding the coin scares me off.

Rule #697 for buying coins on eBay- do not buy from sellers who hold coins in their hand to take a photo. I do not care if it is an $8 coin or an $800 coin, the seller's grubby mitts just put fingerprints all over it That coin has most likely received a light cleaning at some point because there is a noticeable hairline patch going across the neck and I am not seeing the strong luster that one would associate with a "Gem BU" coin.

I think you made a great, GREAT decision staying away from that coin.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll always LOOK at ones like this, but I didn't jump into this one. I'm trying to practice more self control that I didn't have in my younger days. I'm not the savy eBayer that many of you are but I know enough that this didn't feel right for multiple reasons, like gripping a thousand dollar coin....ARRRRGGGGGHHHH!! Reminded me of "Dr. Strangelove"...Precious bodily fluids, LOL.

Quote: my eyes are not as good as it was in my younger years Obviously. Otherwise, you'd easily see the harsh flogging that coin has suffered at the hands of cleaning chemicals. Dipped within an inch of its' life; that coin was black a while ago. Having that one back in a righteous slab would be one of the largest surprises of my adult life.

SuperDave, I wrote I was too compulsive when I was younger, but I can still see well enough, at least I think. Although my wife may differ especially when she's asking me about our house decor...

I wouldn't touch a key date coin ungraded for any amount of money. No, not even that much. Or that much either.

Quote: Although my wife may differ especially when she's asking me about our house decor... I'd touch the coin. I'd love to hold the coin. I trust myself, and I'd buy that one raw if it were the right coin. After I held it to inspect it. I'm of the opinion (consider that term) that the coin in question has been horribly overdipped. The detail is amazing; the luster is gone. That coin should grab you by the throat, in that condition. But it just sits there. The black toning which is left is in places where my admitted experience with dipping tells me it would remain, if it were so heavy that thiourea couldn't remove it all. I don't know the issue well, and don't know if an Uncirculated Details 1932-D is worth the final price, but I *do* know that's the grade it gets from me.

That thing looks fake to me, well at least the front does, but the reverse looks ok. I can agree with the harshly overdipped scenario.

Did anyone notice his current and past auctions? They are/were almost all slabbed. Wonder why this "GEM" was not slabbed?
And only 15 feedbacks.

Sometimes you end up with unslabbed stuff, most of my coins are slabbed though sometimes Ill sell something I've had for a while that wasnt. But its also probable that that was in a details slab and he cracked it out. A key date like that would be very unusual to be the thing you pick to sell not being in a slab
