I recently purchased a silver beaver coin ($25 1 oz) from the RCM boutique in Vancouver. Does anyone here know if a such coin should be taxed? It appears that most silver coins on Colonial Acres are tax exempt.

Even .9999 would attract PST in BC now that the province has opted out of HST.

CC-Ottawa is right. Now that we have switched back over to the PST, all silver coins are taxed.

However I am still making purchases from Colonial Acres on silver coins and they are not taxing them. Really no advantage because you end up spending the difference in shipping. I may pay the tax at the Vancouver Boutique, but there's no shipping charge when I walk in and purchase.

What about J&M? Do they charge tax on these silver commermoratives?
I hope that the tax won't apply to the maples.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

J&M will charge PST of 7% on silver commeroratives if you are BC resident. If you live outside of BC, no tax.

For expensive coins like the 5oz coin, I will order from either Gatewest or Colonial because I would save more than what they charge for shipping. ie for a $500 coin, the tax will be 7% of $500 = $35. Shipping is $6.50 at Gatewest/Colonial. So you save $28.50 if you buy from outside BC.

The reason Colonial and Gatewest, and other out of province dealers don't charge GST is they don't physically have a store in that province, so they can't charge PST. But they do charge PST for Colonial's Ontario customers and Gatewest's Manitoba's customers.
