I know about the top four: PCGS, NGC, ANACS and ICG. The best TPG's seem to be most expensive & have the longest turnaround times. But they will sell for the highest amounts.

I'm not sure if the TPG's upside cancels out the downside, or visa versa. You want the shortest turnaround at the least expense, but with the highest respectability & value.

I'm anticipating future dollar coin errors. Taking into account the advantages & disadvantages of each TPG regarding cost, turnaround time, respectability, resale value, etc., when it comes to grading modern coin errors - which TPG would you go with?

I would go with ANACS. They've industry-recognized respectability, and the willingness to attribute errors NGC and PCGS do not. In my opinion, ANACS is the choice for any error coin, modern or not.

After some research:

I just had some dollar error coins done with ICG. They have a special on dollar coin errors. Total cost is $17 ($12 for the Economy Certification + $5 for the Error). Turnaround for these coins is 7 business days (even though their normal turnaround for Economy modern U.S. coins is 21 days).

Also, they certify Starburst ( Struck Through Grease) error & filled Die Cud on S in States error. I did it with them, even though their resale value is lower, because I was in a rush, they certify the extra errors that some other TPG's don't, they were recommended. Plus, no membership required! Also, ICG is the only TPG with a "No-Grade, No Fee" Policy; they don't charge a grading fee for coins that they don't grade! ICG does charge a $5 administrative fee for care and handling of these coins, but that is it. Credit is applied to future grading. Other major grading services charge full price for a "No-Grade".

I'm wondering how the others compare. I know PCGS charges $40 for them as Mint Errors, with a 25 - 35 business days turnaround. But coins in PCGS holders will bring more most of the time when sold. I've also heard that their grading is frequently generous, which is good as a seller, not so good as a buyer.

ANACS apparently charges $10 for these coins as "Modern (1964-present)" with a 5-COIN MIN., plus $5 per coin for Error Verification, so total cost is $15. Not sure about the turnaround time. ANACS is the only major grading service to grade cleaned, corroded, damaged, repaired, and other "problem coins". I've heard that ANACS tends to grade quickly but conservatively, so it's harder to get a high grade with ANACS.

Also, I think that, other than ICG, the other TPG's may not certify the Starburst error or the filled Die Cud on S in States error, so if a person is trying to get a "double error" with one of these errors plus the smooth edge, missing letters error, they may be out of luck.

Anyone else have differing thoughts or additional feedback?

A lot of people don't take ICG seriously for moderns. HSN has a sweetheart deal with them that puts enormous quantities of 70's into the marketplace.

Good luck with your sales.

I just purchased ten John Adams Double Edge Lettering coins to sell on ebay.

The latest info on prices & turn-around time for these error coins:
PCGS: $40 - 25-35 business days (5-7 weeks!)
NGC: $12.50 - 16-18 business days (3-4 weeks)
ICG: $17 - 7 business days
ANACS: $10 - 2-3 weeks or $25 - 5 days
Only ICG & ANACS take direct submissions without memberships or dealers.

My question, as before: The best TPGs are the most expensive & have the longest turnaround times. But they will sell for the highest amounts.

However, with the long turn-around, prices will drop. I'm not sure if the upside cancels out the downside, or visa versa. Opinions?

Possibly PCI. They run interent specials monthly and now offer the J.T. Stanton signature service.

Just might be worth a shot.

PCI charges $15 for their "Signature Service" with an "attempt" at 5 day turn-around.

But, according their website, they attribute Smooth Edge Dollar coins but not " Strike Doubling (also referred to as ejection doubling, Mechanical Doubling, among other terms)."

yechi7,
Strike Doubling is a completely different process from double edge lettering. I would think that PCI would attribute the double edge lettering dollars but I bet since they are so new that their website hasn't been updated to reflect that fact.
