Just won a lot on ebay which has 3 (count em'!) monogram coins. All in bad condition but theres definitely 1 marcian and 1 leo - I think I see another marcian though.

Theres also a couple of Arcadius, a Theodosius and some unknowns. I was going to get a similar lot of greek coins but I lost it. Oh well.

Tiny late roman coins. I'm hoping for an honorius in the mix. I'm really interested in the really tiny one. If anyone is interested in any of them, I already have all the emperors represented so they are up for grabs.

Yay!

But I don't know what a monogram coin is. Can you link me up?

Monograms nowadays are just initials but a roman monogram has all the letters of the guys name in it. Later rulers issued coins with their monograms on - Marcian's only bronze issues are monogram coins. Usually they are surrounded by a wreath and theres no legend.

Usually, they are struck on planchets smaller than the die so often the monogram is partial and to have one which is centered, with full legends, wreath and with mint mark is incredibly rare (someone here has what I would say is the best Marcian in existance anywhere - including underground). Usually these are worn and crumby and badly struck like the ones I've bought.

Heres a guide:

Note how Libius Severus' monogram coin shows the monogram of Ricimer. Thats a story for another day but the politics of late rome is fascinating and you should read up on it. VK has a Libius severus coin somewhere. Hes the 160th rarest emperor.

All monogram coins are rare. The first to issue them - theodosius II - didnt issue many - so tog et one you need a coin of Leo, Marcian or rarer - look at the 207 rulers rankings and take a look at how hard it would be to make a set.

Im now the owner of 3 marcian monograms (I believe there are 2 in this lot)!
