I have heard that people are holding on to Pre-1982 Cents,
are these cents going to be rare in the future?

The pre-1982 pennies are made from copper. Each of those pennies are worth about 3 cent a piece right now. People hoard them just in case copper prices ever go up.

I have a five gallon bucket filled to the rim but that's all. Some people have 55 gallon drums filled lol.

Isn't it illegal to melt pennies at the moment?

Thanks! Is there evidence that this will change anytime soon? Is there a historical pattern where after so many years the coins can be melted? Or is this just pure speculation?

Will these cents be harder to find in the future, just like the the Wheats are getting harder to find today?

Josh - of course they will be. There will be some almost always out there - but the odds are they will start to gradually disappear. When I was younger in the 60's - wheat cents were everywhere and easliy found...even into the 70's. You can still find them once in a while. The pre-1982's are starting to become a little scarcer - but still are easily found.

Wait for copper prices to fall and you'll see the market flooded with copper pennies... tens of millions of coins. Not exactly pennies from heaven, but lots of them all over the place.

This kind of thread is something will see a lot. People always speak about someday being able to melt pennies. But in fact, I like the copper pennies because they're a different metal than the other ones. So therefore I saving them because I like them myself.

Its pure speculation and wishful thinking. Theres no reason for the government to ever allow it since they would lose money replacing them. Even if the penny is eliminated they still want them out there as people ween off them. Not to mention if anyone was going to do it they would so they would make the money instead of other people. As far as saving them if you get a lot you can sell them on ebay for a premium. I wouldnt go out of my way looking for them but if you come across them theres no harm in saving them until you have enough to sell

Yeah, people that roll hunt for varieties/errors tend to hoard the coppers while they're going through looking. Might as well tend to the OCD as well as the coin hunting.
