A friend of mine picked up this coin, and now is offering it up to me. What would a fair price be?
Unfortunately, as g048406 has mentioned, your friend just spent twice that coin's worth on it. I would expect an average Heritage customer to have a far better sense of a coin's true worth than an average
ebay buyer, and note that identical coin sold at one of the largest Heritage auctions of the year where one could expect the highest concentration of discerning buyers.
With that said, I think the NGC coin might have gone a little low at the FUN auction. Not enough to justify $955, of course. Part of the problem is, collectors interested in this coin are looking for problem-free examples and have the disposable income to acquire them. These are a
specialty. So, frankly, this one lost far more value that a different issue might have in similar condition, because the second half of the rarity-demand equation wasn't (and isn't) there.
So the actual answer is, there is no price you could offer which would be fair to you both. He's just thrown a bunch of money out the window, and it's not coming back.
