Living in eastern Ontario the humidity during the summer month is very high, + 75%.

If I am living in a house without air conditioning what can I do to protect my coins?

I run a dehumidifier in the basement all summer and on the real humid days I have to empty it twice, that's over 2 gallons of water.

Do I want to store my coins in the basement?
Upstairs feels even more humid then the basement does.

What does everyone recommend I do to protect my collection.

For stuff in a safe or enclosed box, get one of these:

2 gallons is an awful lot of water. Mind you, I don't have to worry about that where I live as it is practically a desert.

I recal reading somewhere that it is best to keep your coins out of basements, but wait for someone else to give input.

I run a dehumidifier in the basement 24/7 from spring to fall, I bought a model with a continuous drain hose, so I don't have to empty it a couple time a day...

Store your coins in air tight capsule`s. store those air tight capsule`s in a air tight safe. What really bugs me is the people that hide them in wall`s

Just make sure you're not putting them in those air tight capsules on a humid day!

I'm also from eastern Ontario. I keep my coins in the basement, in a closed cabinet. I bought an EVA-DRY dehumidifier and placed it inside the cabinet (look up EVA-DRY E-333 on ebay. It cost about $20 with shipping included). This does remove the humidity from within the cabinet. I also run a dehumidifier 24/7 from May to September, with drain hose, not only for my coins, but for my electronics. I keep the humidity level at 55%.
I have done this for several years already and do not have any problems.

As the old real estate adage goes "location, location, location" is everything. Where you store your collection is just as important as how you store your collection. Your basic rule of thumb should be, "if the environment is comfortable enough for a person, it will probably be satisfactory for your coins". Extremes such as a basement (cold and humid) or attic (hot and harsh) must be avoided in order to keep your coin collection in the finest condition possible. A location in a den or bedroom away from the kitchen is the best location.
Personally I find one of the safest places to store your coin collection is in a safe deposit box at a bank, where I rent out one that houses appr. 400 of my most valuable pieces. Unfortunately, this is probably the most expensive solution too. Bank vaults are constructed to keep criminals and fire out. To deal with the fire issue, the vaults are made with a material that will emit water vapor that will keep the temperature down in the vault. Naturally, some water escapes over time. Therefore, this would provide a very humid environment for your collection. The water vapor can be absorbed by placing a silica gel pack inside your safe deposit box. Remember to change it a couple a times a year to keep it fresh and absorbing as much water vapor as possible!

I have heard that silica gel is good for keeping humidity out. I take little packets that I get from shoes, clothes etc and put them in the little wooden boxes that I store my silver in. My question is, can you buy silica gel in a store?

Can you pipe that humidity to my house? The prairies are bone-dry all winter. I have to apply lotion every 12 hours or I shrivel up into a potato. I assume this keeps my copper looking nice.
