Hi everyone,
Just wondering on your opinions on ICG as far as reliability in grading Canadian stuff... I just purchased a nice 1901 5 cent that I'm hoping would cross to at least a MS63 from PCGS... What do you think?

Hard to tell from the photos, not the prettiest coin by far. The toning doesn't really have an affect on the "quality" of the coin...but it sure does have a lot of weight when it comes to eye appeal.

ICG isn't as well recognized as PCGS or NGC, so it really is a gamble as to whether or not it would be worth it.

It could have a higher market value in a PCGS holder, or the grade could be altered such that it would loose more value. Either way, it is the same coin.

I've heard it referred to as I Can't Grade :-) That being said I've had 2 or 3 pass through my hands and the grades have seemed reasonable.

Every time I sent ICG graded coins to be cross graded, they came back at least one grade lower from ICCS and CCCS.If I bid on an ICG slab,I downgrade by 2 just to be on the safe side.

Similar to cdcoinman, I've found ICG coins usually come back 1 grade lower from ICCS. Based on a limited sample size, but their grading isn't that bad. They seem consistent.

Remember that ICCS grades "harder" on Canadian coins that any other TPG. Even if you send a PCGS 65 to ICCS, they may return it as 64 RED for example.

I only have 2 graded ICG coins, a large cent and a dime...both grades seem appropriate.

If you are planning on sending this coin to PCGS, it MAY receive a similar grade (or 63 like you say) just because its another US TPG.

Id keep it in the 64 slab, save yourself the $50

jdmmern, I feel ICG grades a little too liberal for my taste and as a result will never buy their coins. Also, Canadian coins slabbed by ICG tend to sell far less in the marketplace than an I.C.C.S. coin.
However, everyone is entitled to their opinion, use your judgement when buying coins which coins with experience and time!

That _used_ to be norm, but in the last 4 years, I would say the opposite is now true... most certainly with my coins I send to PCGS (small cents, NFLD cents and nickel dollars)...
