What is this? I found this a long time ago and am wondering what it is. OK, truth be told, my daughter is wondering what it is and I need a reasonable answer. Reading other posts makes me think it is a capped die, but what I know about coins looks longingly at people who know nothing in awe of their brilliance.

Can anyone help?

Is it thinner and lighter than a normal cent?
Btw, it is a genuine error, and a nice one too. Just can't narrow it down completely yet. And welcome to the forum!

Weight please. Looks like a split planchet to me.

dpsampson...If you find out what year this penny might be, then here is a list of used penny weights I have accumulated...It might give you an idea what the coin used) should weigh..

It could be a split/rolled thin planchet with an in collar uniface strike, if the weight is in fact less than a normal cent. The obverse is fully struck with a wire rim and the reverse has a ghost image of the obverse.

It is thinner, I believe. I will check tonight. I do not have a scale to weigh it, as I am guessing that the one in my bathroom will lack the required accuracy.

There is definitely a "ghost image" on the blank side.

How do you determine the year?

Thanks for all of the replies. This is very cool.
