I saw one of those in a locked donation bin here in Canada once but had no idea what it was. I tried to look it up when I got home but didn't have any luck... Why is there a heart on an American dime?

It's a counterstamp. Not sure if it has any meaning beyond "oh cool, a stamp", but I found my first counterstamped coin this weekend so I was pretty chuffed :D

I've also been doing my part by stamping some of my MPPS quarters. They won't get melted by the Mint, so they should stay in circulation for a while...

I think somebody is doing them just because it gives a smile. I know when the wife got back shew thought it was pretty neat. And ordered me not to get rid of it!
Back in the day they were stamped as a cheap advertising means.

WildYapok, it's a counterstamp. Don't rightly know the reasons people do that, but there you have it.

It's also an American one cent, not a dime.
