Hi all, I'm pretty new to this hobby and I've been stacking bullion for the past year or so. I'd like to try getting into some semi-numi coins. I think this will be mostly to give to my 2 boys down on the line. I'm interested in the GSA Carson City Morgans. Do you guys have any place to recommend to buy these? I want to steer clear from ebay until I know what I'm doing. I've found a pretty good selection of the black holder GSA's at APMEX (I'm thinking maybe going with MS63's) but I wanted to see if there were other places you guys like and trust. With APMEX, I'm guessing you get whatever they send you. Not that I really know what to look for yet, but still.... Any links, suggestions, comments, etc, are welcome. Thanks!

I love these coins!
My only advice is buy the coin that looks the best to you and dont worry about the grade too much. I have some MS-62/63 that I like much better than a MS-65 I have.

This guy tends to be high on his prices http://www.brokencc.com/modules.php...age&pg_id=12 I personally can't recommend the Broken CC due to a less than professional experience I had with them. I went in with a want list for someone and had my resale permit in hand and he wouldn't give me one cent off of his already too high retail prices. He has nice coins but you can get the same quality elsewhere for less. A good place to view a large selection of certified GSA dollars from very reputable dealers is http://www.collectorscorner.com/ There you can find just about whatever grade you want and usually there are more than one to choose from. I browse this website frequently and have developed a relationship with a few of the dealers. Ed ANA LM-3175

I buy crap off ebay all the time and never have had a problem. Nothing wrong with buying GSA Morgans off there as long as you are happy with what you're paying.

Maybe I read one too many horror stories about getting scammed via ebay on forums like this. Plus, not knowing how to pick out those fakes makes it all the worse. Thanks for the links above. Plenty of coins to go through.

Heritage Auctions, StacksBowers Auctions, and Teletrade Auctions have a good supply of GSA dollars to check out. David Lawrence Rare Coins is another place to look.

If everything goes OK (99+% of the time) you don't hear anything about them. The horror stories you hear come from that last 1% and most of those aren't really "horror stories". Use of common sense and not getting greedy will protect you from most of those as well.

Quote: I personally can't recommend the Broken CC Yea they arent the cheapest place in town but do have a good selection. ebay would have been my recommendation but he says he wants to avoid it even though I the dangers of buying there are extremely overblown imo

When it comes to ebay, if the seller has "No Retuns" instead of the customary "14 day return" policy, I would definatley steer clear of them. I can vouch for Northeast Numismatics as well. Collectorscorner has a good wide lasso of dealers. I have had success with some of the Big Auction Houses; Heritage, Stacks & Bowers, David Lawrence, TeleTrade, Greatcollections, EagleEye and coinbuys.com are another good spots for collectors.

Would the pricing of a certified GSA Morgans be different from pricing of a Morgan graded in a normal TPG holder?

If its fake or not as advertised you can return it regardless of what that says. Quote:Would the pricing of a certified GSA Morgans be different from pricing of a Morgan graded in a normal TPG holder? Carson City Morgans from 1878, 1890 and 1891 are going to be more expensive in the original GSA holders. 1879, 1880, 1881, 1885 are going to be about the same in the original holder as NGC/PCGS/ANACS holders. 1882, 1883, 1884 it depends on the grade. MS-64 and higher coins seems to sell for more in a TPG slab vs original GSA holder. Regardless of Price, these original GSA holders are really cool, everyone should have at least one in their collection. Edit: 1879 CC are also more expensive in the GSA holder, but whats an extra thousand dollars once your spending that much anyways?!? LOL

Maybe try going to a local coin shop or two and get a gut feel for them.....Don't buy until you are sure of e-bay and heritage auction prices.....be an educated buyer....and from the couple I have, there is a lot of eye appeal differences in these coins in the common dates,,82-84

Do watch ebay for them as you will get to know what people will pay for them. And you will find that over time you will gain some insite on the dates and grades. Check to see if you have any coin shows to go to. I like to talk to the dealers and get to know them. Small shows are my favorite, 30 or so tables, there free, plenty of free parking and not to busy.
