Hello fellow coin enthusiasts! It's been a while since I completed my higher grade 7070 set and I haven't posted much since then. Well, I haven't been actively buying coins lately as they are prohibitively expensive. An exciting victory for me this evening though, HOW DID I DO?

The coin is a Draped Bust $10 Gold Coin from 1801, and clearly a problem coin. However I can't imagine getting one of these coins much cheaper. Perhaps only $700 worth of gold in it, but worth a lot more numismatically. I am buying the coin because I have always wanted to own one of this types since I started collecting seriously last year, but also plan on selling it for a profit. In case you guys think I am off, and it was a poor purchase, there is a 14 day return privilege possible.

Before bidding on this coin, I also investigated its history and came to the conclusion that the same coin sold in a Heritage auction back in 2010 for $4887 in an NGC VF Details Jewelry holder. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...#55475547776
Update: Unfortunately my bid of $3600 my outbid and I am back to scratch.

So you didn't win it? Were you sniped? The price does look good and it appears to be the same coin that was an NGC VF details. I agree the price was good and as we're heading into "Buyers Season" perhaps you can find another in the same price range.

Yes, unfortunately I didn't win this particular coin. I had arranged to snipe it myself through Gixen, but the price had risen from $2200 to $4000+ within a matter of minutes. I am thinking that it was definetly the same exact coin that sold on Heritage for 5 grand in 2010. Now that it sold for a thousand less, I wonder who lost the difference or if this coin has traded hands many times since.

I see. Well somebody gambled on ICG and lost. They did get an EF details grade but the ICG slab probably hurt the realized price. Whoever won the ebay auction looks to have gotten a good deal.

Sorry to hear you lost out. Good lesson here in not counting your chickens before they hatch... ebay auctions for good coins always jump in the closing seconds as most snipe programs are set to bid with between 3 and 8 seconds left.

It looks like a nice coin, FWIW.
