This is my first cleaning of a coin and I am almost finished. As a novice and having no experience with ancient coins I have only been able to identify some of the obverse. DN CONSTANTINVSPFAVG. I'm going to throw it out there....dominus noster / Constantine one or two? / pius Felix / Augustus . I have no clue of the reverses. Am I close? Should I get kicked out of class? Thanks everyone! Also any advice on the finishing on the cleaning would greatly be appreciated.

OOH this is the nicest one in the lot. You've done a superb job cleaning it - id stop there.
Your ID is wrong - I know the exact ID - try the Wildwinds Partial Legend Search Engine. Read off the reverse legend that you can - hint, thats not a D.
This is a nice type and you'll be pleasantly suprised when you ID it.

you're barking up the right tree, just the wrong branch of the constantine "tree". you're correct on the obverse legend. I was wrong on the reverse when I first saw it, go here for the kill... http://www.tesorillo.com/aes/home.htmoh yeah, I went back and looked at the original picture, I remember you purchasing that lot. you did a good job cleaning that coin up!

Sweet. Thanks I just looked it up on your link Chrs. What would be the "official" labeling for filing? Just the description?
Also I'm not going to use the toothpick anymore but it's still soaking in distilled water as I type this. When I dry it off it looks brownish with a lighter spots.. Dried dirt. Should I "seal" it with something? I heard the people use a museum wax, mineral oil etc.. What works the best and/ or should I work on the letters for more dirt. Sorry for all the questions. Everybody I know that collects "money" does the modern stuff so they are NO help.
Thanks again everyone!

This one looks stable - I wouldnt use anything on it. I use Ren Wax - its excellent stuff. Instant grade in a tin.
Have you worked out the ID yet?

you could probably clean it up a bit more, but it is fine as it is..up to you. but it's probably better to quite now if you unsure...that's what I always do (several times I wish I had quite sooner than I did!). click on types of reverse, then hit "other victories", then after that you'll know what to hit based on your reverse legend.

I think I have it but please correct me if I'm wrong. Ok here I go. DNCONSTA____SPFAVG (dominos Noster Constantius pius Felix Augustus) HOC SIGNO VICTOR ERIS. SIS or SIRM. Constantius II. Mint 350-351 AD.
Did I graduate from day one? I'm waiting for some ren wax to arrive that I ordered to preserve it. Is there any specific way on how it should be applied for the best results? Thank you everyone!

Thats the one! Look up the history of the type - its hte most interesting of the late bronzes.
HOC SIGNO VICTOR ERIS - By this sign, you shall conquer. The words spoken to Constantine in his vision at the battle of Milvian Bridge.
My tip: Warm the wax first and apply with a qtip. I use my cleaning pin to jab the Qtip to soften it before so it gens in the hard to reach place. Apply it and leave it on top of the tin (putting it somewhere soft will cause issues with the wax). Leave for 20 odd minutes and buff with the other end of the QTip.
Im not sure if this needs it - it wont add value and may detract from it - this is a real collectors piece.

I won't put the wax on then. I currently have it in a airtight coin capsule so ill just leave it. Ill use the wax on the other coins that are still soaking.
