Wondering if anyone could get me some info on what to look for on a genuine 1909 s Lincoln. NOT a VDB. I was looking at my folder just now and noticed that the 's' is kinda far down and to the right of center... Ugh... pic's coming soon...
Rest in Peace

One of the main fakes, are regular 1909 lincolns, with a soldered on " s ".

He's taking an acetone bath to see if I can get some of the crud out of the 's'. I am slightly less nervous because I was searching google and found a PCGS slabbed that looked similar. Not saying they don't make mistakes but it helps. I should have pics in a bit here...

Also, Numismo, when you say many internet resources, which ones are you talking about? I can't find a single website that has specifics for dies or mint mark locations. Copper coins has some great close up's of RPMs but it seems like the rest of the website is either under construction or broken. Lincoln Cent Resource doesn't have good info either. There is PLENTY of info on fake 's' VDBs but I don't know if they used the same obverse dies on the regular 's'? Any specific direction for me? Thanks!

Okay,

iPhone through a loupe on the window sill... All the darker crud would not come off with a three hour soak. What say you all?

Before 1990, the mint mark was applied to the die by hand, so its position on the coin varies with the die used.

There are only four known obverse dies (and therefore, mint mark positions) used for the 1909-S VDB. I am unsure how many there are for the the 1909-S. Given the mintage difference, I would expect a proportional increase of dies used.

To once again misquote the rabbi from "Fiddler on the Roof": There is a counterfeit for *everything*!
