One of my friends showed me a Lincoln Memorial penny from 197? that upon examination proved to be extremely unusual. As the penny is not mine yet, I do not have any pictures to post but I will try and do justice with a verbal description. Since it is not my coin, I can't post a picture of it, if I had one.

First off, it appears to be struck multiple times during the coining process. Twice in a rotated position and once that would move coin images to the left.

On the obverse:

- The motto "In God We Trust" appears to be struck in the normal position but also imprinted a second time after We. Thus blocking a good viewing of the last digit of the year.

- While the motto is rotated to the right the word Liberty is imprinted a second time down in the opposite direction over where the left lapel is of Lincoln's coat

- Besides the initial impression of Lincoln there is a second impression of Lincoln also.

- The right coin edge appears to be struck twice offset to the left by 1/8".

- There is so much going on that I could not tell if the date was imprinted more than once. However there is a faint impression of a possible date mark below where the motto should start.

- To my untrained eye there appears to be multiple strike marks that just confuses me beyond what I have said.

- There is also a round depression that is in front of Lincoln's face caused by I don't know what.

On the reverse:

- Above the "One" you can make out a faint striking of Lincoln as the reverse of the impression on the obverse but it is rotated 90 degrees from normal.

- There is a host of "ghost images" on the reverse that seem to have migrated from the obverse and have rotated to an unnatural position from their position on the front.

This coin seems to have been struck multiple times during the minting process but I have no accounting for the appearance of Lincoln's image on the reverse as a reverse imprint (causing his face to look to the left rather than the right as it does on a normal coin).

He has said that he would like to sell the coin and he wants $5 for it. If I didn't know him I'd offer him $3 and hope he would take it.

I don't know coin blems well enough to say yes to his offer, or to say it is worth more.

From this confusing description what you guesstimate a fair price would be.

I do know that if I got the coin, I would be extremely tempted to send it in for grading and verification. I have yet to send a coin in to a TPG but would on this.

I'm just so confused............

This is definately not a clipped plancett, or a WAM. I do believe that it is truly a one of a kind coin.

Has anyone ever seen such a coin as I have described because I have not.

From your description, I'd buy it on a $5.00 gamble, if it's a double strike and possibly a flip over multiple strike, it could be worth a few hundred, if it's bunk then it's a cheap gamble, don't argue - just buy it, heck I'll double your money or more if it looks good in a photo, as I'm sure many others would here as well ghostrider.

westcoin I had decided to purchase the coin from my friend.

I've looked at the site that you referred and there was a reference to a ghost image on a wheat backed penny. However on my coin the ghost image is tilted possibly 20 to 30 degrees so that the base of the left side of the memorial is in approximately a little past the 2 o'clock position. There was also a reference to a DDO but the " DDO (?)" on the coin in question is nowhere as close as the image on the reference site.

If this is a DDO (it's the first one I've seen) is new to me visually in hand. So the question that I have, is if it is a DDO would the entire coin be visually rotated?

When I get the coin in hand, I will be bringing it to a couple of different lcs to get their opinion on what exactly I have.

I'm going out to dinner tomorrow night (actually this evening by time) as I'm going to ask him to take a picture of the coin for posting here.

To put it bluntly neither him nor I have ever seen something like this. The coin is in a 2 x 2 and what I described was what I saw in hand through the viewing port.

Should I take the coin out of the holder when I am taking pictures?

I've never attempted this sort of thing before, so it will most likely be awhile before I have them on this site.

There is just so much going on with this coin that I feel that I'm seeing double. That's why I want to bring the coin to these two coin shops. Yet I feel that I'm putting the cart in front of the horse.
