I'm always suspicious that these "lowball" coins are not the result of normal wear and more likely from some mechanical means.
Even a pocket piece carried for decades isn't going to wear like this Peace $

No idea how it was "made"...just saved her from a melt bucket because I thought she looked cool.

Oh, don't get me wrong - definitely cool! I'd love that Peace in my collection.
Any thought from folks out there about chances it is normal wear or altered?

If the date is no longer readable, the chance it's normal wear approaches 100%. It's no good in a Lowball set if you can't read the date.

Holy cow. If the dark patch is the true opening of the top section of the number, it's definitely an 8. The similar opening of a 3 is noticeably elongated by comparison, much less circular than the 8. No chance of seeing a mint mark, though?

If this is normal wear from circulation then I have a hard time believing it was in circulation in the US long enough to get this worn. Is the thought this was a pocket piece? What are the chances this ended up circulating to a much later date in another country (Mexico etc?) and then found its way back? Just curious - as worn as it is, it's still a nice coin.
