if I use a metal detector on property owned by my uncle where a house used to be how likely is it that ill find coins from 1800s and could I find earlier coins as well? is a coin and jewlry store a good place to get the most out of the coins? how likely is it that ill find any of these coins: drapped bust dime, half dime, dollar, flying eagle, two cent piece,Silver Three Cent Piece, any gold coins how often was gold coins used? how far down will I have to dig? anything thats a drapped bust is going to be worth more than the others right? did people bury coins in the yard in 1800s is it likely to find a catch or is it not very good chnace. the coins will be real not fakes if there from the ground right?
also I heard that cleaning a coin is bad should you only clean it if you cant read the date? causse I assume if you read the date you can look it up to see what it is. what coins are in better condition in the ground the silver and gold ones? what about the nickel and copper based coins do they not hold up as good when found in the ground? what is the typical grade that you usually find on coins in the ground?

Theres really no way to answer how likely it is youll find coins. Maybe you will the odds are probably against you, its always kind of a crap shoot. Anywhere there were people you could find some but its not a guarantee. As for what youll find again who knows.

As for the best place to sell it will depend what you find. If you find something nice youll almost always do better selling it your self on ebay than selling to a shop. If theyre just common coins a shop would be your best bet as its usually not worth the extra effort.

If you like metal detecting Id say go for it and see what turns up. If youre only interested as a way to make money I would say its likely not worth your time

Yeah you might find a few you might find a bunch you might find nails and junk or all of the above. I've done it for 35 years and do it to get away from it all and enjoy being outdoors. I don't even care any more what I find as long as I'm out doors it's a good day. I would consider it a hobby odds of hitting the big one is tough and some have done it. Research will take you a long way. I hunt woods and farm fields based on research of old news papers books etc the obvious places are tough to find a lot these days. Good luck and HH

If the property has been bought and sold for years, there is no knowing what you'll find.
Try and report back. Good luck!
