News Release: August 2, 2013

BOSSIER CITY, LOUISIANA â€" The 2013 Ark-La-Tex Coin, Stamp & Card Exposition was held at the Bossier City Civic Center on July 27-28, 2013. Fifty-one coin and currency dealers from six states participated, joined by six stamp and six sports card dealers. This year's Expo was the 50th annual coin event hosted by the Shreveport Coin Club.

Public attendance was 800 on Saturday, a notable increase over last year, and 225 on Sunday. Bullion coins and bars were in demand, despite stagnant metals prices. Type set collecting appears to be enjoying a resurgence, with brisk trading in vintage albums and folders by Whitman and Dansco, both empty and in varying stages of completion. The recent birth of Prince William and Kate's son, H.R.H. Prince George of Cambridge, stoked interest in Queen Elizabeth II crowns and stamps.

Several educational exhibits greeted patrons. Shreveport Coin Club members displayed Northwest Louisiana Exonumia, with emphasis on transit tokens for the now-defunct trams and electric railroads. Also on display was "Louisiana Confederate Issues," with state, parish and local notes, as well as "Civil War Soldiers from Arkansas, Louisiana and Missouri," including cartes de visite and a group photo of General Banks and his staff, on loan from an anonymous collector. A club member reprised a dazzling display of 109 Morgan dollars arranged to show the spectrum of silver toning. The Red River Stamp Club issued a cachet honoring classic U.S. muscle cars, and depicting a lime-green 1970 Barracuda.

Upon admission, young patrons got to reach in the foreign coin grab bag, take some coins, and learn about their countries of origin. A specially struck token commemorating the Shreveport Coin Club's 50th anniversary (1963-2013) was also on sale.

The 2014 Ark-La-Tex Expo will be July 26-27, 2014. The Shreveport Coin Club, the Expo's sponsor, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation; excess proceeds from the Expo are applied to gifts to local schools and libraries.
