Edit: I actually attributed the coin incorrectly I have updated the Obverse describtion

Here is the latest addition to my Tetradrachm collection! It is another one of those I really shouldn't have bought especially since my work term wasn't renewed (the university didn't get as much funding as expected) so I am frantically trying to find a new job for June. It hopefully shouldn't be too much of a problem since my boss is one of the most well connected people at the University and four postings just came up for 1 year terms (yay maternity leave). Anyways enough about the personal life none of you are here for that!

Vespasian AR billon tetradrachm, Alexandria, regnal year 2
Obverse: EDIT LEGEND: AVTOK KAIS SEBA OVESPASIANOV Laureate bust right LB before
Reverse: ALEXANDREIA Alexandria standing left, wearing elephant headdress holding wreath and scepter
25mm 11.9grms

My photo refused to turn out so I am just using the sellers photo.

I know little about tetradrachms. I would have guessed with that legend that it was 'Tito'. Nice coin !

Thanks for the kind words.

FR - (Also see my edit it should make more sense now) I was wondering about that too but based on what I have seen Vespasian's name before taking power was Titus Flavius Vespasianus which is also the full name of Titus. Since this coin is early into his rule he may not have taken on the full name as emperor, Titus Flavius Ceaser Vespasianus Augustus. In the Alexandrian coinage from later in his rule he does have the KAIS which I am pretty sure is the Caesar title. Also from all of the Titus tetradrachms that I have seen he is TITOU and not TIT.

That is at least my understanding of it.

Hey, nice! I like the billon/silver tets from alexandria but they are often in detestable condition. This ones nice.

Its definitely vespasian - its practically identical to the wildwinds example:

That shoddy old thing sold for nearly £50!

The difference between that one and mine is the date the one you see on wildwinds is LA (year one)AD 69, mine is LB (year two) AD 69/70

And I agree with you Ben about the tetradrachm's most aren't in the best condition especially with the lettering. As long as it has a recognizable bust and a semi decent reverse I am usually ok with them. And of course if they are at the right price this one was a little more than I usually pay (it was cheaper than your example) but I enjoy supporting Canadian sellers.

I agree it is 'the old man'. After seeing it I browsed through wildwinds to check on Tito's legend types. A definite Vespasian ! Personally I have always been partial to coins of Titus. Very nice coin and if it had been AE I might have found a way to snatch it ! I leave the gold and silver to the 'young' ........ Although Ben has me eyeing something for 'sentimental' reasons.

I would love to get my hands on a decently priced Titus. I am constantly on the search! I must admit you have turned me on to AE coins as well. I just prefer the coins to have a little meat on them. I also haven't really found any Alexandrian bronze that has 'called' to me as it were. The only one I am currently on the search for is the Trajan dichalkon with the hem hem crown just because it is so tiny.

I looked at the Dichalkons - $25 for an AE12 is ludicrous!

you'd probably be better suited buying an uncleaned lot from the area and trying your luck, to be honest.

I don't think there are many uncleaned lots from Egypt kicking around based on what little I know of laws for Ancient items.

If you find one I am there! I may just be looking in the wrong places. You do have a few more years on this than I do. :D

I firmly believe everything is better when its Tetradrachm. There is a special place in my heart for the tets.
