Thats... very odd. It appears to be made of lead, so it's not a coin, and the reverse is unlike any Roman coin I've ever seen. The obverse portrait is bearded, which pretty much dates the piece to the period 100-300 AD, but I'm thinking the portraiture is too crude to be able to ID the emperor by it. And unfortunately both the obverse legend and the reverse inscription are too incomplete to read.

I agree, Very interesting piece that does appear to be ancient. Did you dig this up? Maybe someone over in the Ancient coin section may have seen one of these before.

Found out more : the original is a huge Commodus medaillon, this is probably a medieval or modern cast -fake-

Commodus, AE42 Medallion, Rome. ca 191 AD. 58.90 gr. M COMMODVS ANTONINVS PIVS FELIX AVG BRIT, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left / VOTIS FELICIBVS, Harbor at Ostia with emperor standing at right, before a tripod, accompanied by a priest; lighthouse at right; in foreground, a sacrificed bull. At left, ship under sail with Serapis seated in stern; four other ships above and below. Gnecchi 174; Cohen 993.
If it is a cast copy I suspect it is still an old one !
What is the diameter and weight ?

See without the Roman knowledge you guys have I would have placed the piece later as the portrait reminded me of Julian II.
Yall got some skills.

My first thought was Julian and it does look 4th century doesn't it. But I thought it must be someone with an extraordinarily high opinion of himself and I came up with Commodus. I double checked the posting and 'Rudi' had the ID already so I merely checked Wildwinds and it is the first listing. Easiest search I ever made. I think the coin looks good. If it were faked they would have made it bigger (still have no specs) but it looks like it is old. Very old. I would not bet against it !
