i cant figure out why this coin has hit such a high price so early in the auction. I know its an obverse 3 but I dont think it is worth what it is going for, am I missing something here?

Beats me! But it looks like two bidders are pretty interested.

Victoria birthday hysteria?

Whenever I see a bidder bidding so many times in a row, I see the situation as abnormal.

It's your auction.. You should know what it is or maybe research it before you put it up for sale....the coin is in your hands to look at.
Either you missed something or the bidders aren't very bright. Either way it sounds like you are getting more for it than you intended, so enjoy it!

Are you sure its not an obverse #2? An obv. #2 in VF lists for $65. I can't tell from the pic.

Looks like a 3a to me with the large serif centre bar E. I would just chalk it up to two inexperienced/enthusiastic bidders who might each be assuming the other knows something they don't. @petersun Some people just like to bid that way. You get to recognize them after they've been around a while. The odd time it's shill bidding so it does raise a flag for me to check into their bidding history a little more but I wouldn't say it was always abnormal. p.s. Just to be clear I DON'T think and am NOT implying or insinuating or anything else that @gidjit is shill bidding his own auction here!

Auction ended with no new bids since the flurry on the 23rd.
By the way, gidjit, your 1858 did nicely, I think

@kuh_85... just wondering.... how does one 'shill bid' his own auction?

I think that the good pictures and eye-catching background might be in your favour
