I have a chance to buy a 1927 2.50 gold coin...My question is,,,, It is in VF condition.....Offred at $200....looks like melt value right now is aprox $180....Would I be buying a coin that is only bullion value?, Or do common date gold coins values hold even with dropping gold prices....Of course, if gold goes up?..I don't own any gold coins,,,Maybe I should try it? Your thoughts....

Common date gold coins regardless of denomination have their value tied to the spot price of gold. Gold goes up so does the value of the coin, gold goes down then the value of that gold coin goes down. At $200.00 this gold piece is a real bargain and you should buy it because the current premium over melt value is well above what he is asking for it.

$ 2.50 gold coin - quarter eagle
$ 5.00 gold coin - half eagle
$10.00 gold coin - eagle
$20.00 gold coin - double eagle

$200 sounds like a fair price. Just make sure you look it over closely to make sure it isn't a counterfeit. Personally I don't have enough confidence in my skills to make that determination so I only by gold coins from a trusted dealer.

It it were me, I would take a close look at the coin. That almost sounds like too good of a deal. If it is authentic, absolutely buy it.

with everyone's comments.. If its real it sounds like a pretty good deal.
And if gold goes up again it could be a great deal..

If you don't mind me asking, where is it for sale? A coin store? Private sale? Online? Craigslist! A friend? I'm only curious because as mentioned authenticity should be checked and the source of the coin could help to determine that..

I agree with the comments above. If authentic, $200 is a very good price.

Heck, if you decide you don't want it I would buy it from you. I love old gold an even a details piece is worth $200 to me.

Great find

$200 is a great price with gold currently where it's at.
