Hi All,

I got these whilst metal detecting on holiday. The hotel/Lodge allowed metal detecting on site, which apparently was near some roman dwellings. So I assume these would be roman....but I stand to be corrected. They are badly corroded, I did some photoshop work on them to enhance the edges.

Any help is appreciated.

I believe it is the emperor Theodosius with the reverse of VOT X MLVT XX with a mint mark of SMK? The obverse legend should read DN THEODOSIUS PF AVG (Our Lord Theodosius Pius Felix Augustus) This coin was minted Cyzicus.

Echizento is 100% on the money!

Theodosius was the last guy to rule the whole roman empire...coinage got teensy, wars got dire and western Rome was overrun soon after. Theodosius did, however, issue a few big coins - as big as some sestertii, but this was the end of good coinage. Soon, coinage dropped in size from where yours is at - to around 7-8mm. They had to trade bags of these (folles) to get anything, like hyperinflation in zimbabwe - and Anastasius finally repaired the damage and reformed coinage (creating coins refered to as 'folles'!).
