In 480BC the Carthaginian General Hamilcar landed in Sicily with a force said by ancient sources
to number 300,000 at the 'invitation' of Terillus the deposed despot of Himera.
The city, defended by Theron the despot of Agrigentum was saved by the arrival of Gelon of Syracuse,
who defeated the much larger Carthaginian force in a battle considered at the time equal to the one at Marathon.
When Hannibal Mago (grandson of Hamilcar) returned to the scene in 407BC,
Himera was completely destroyed and 3,000 prisoners 'sacrificed' by the Carthaginians in memory of Hamilcar.
While the Himeraeans continued to exist for centuries as an identifiable people,
the City was razed to the ground by the Carthaginians and never rebuilt.
A very long long time ago .....

My eight year old Nicholas said the exact same thing ! Great minds ......

BTW the coins were listed simply as Greek Sicily.
The Syracuse was easy enough for me to spot. My ID is slightly tentative but I believe it is either Dion or Timoleon.

The Himera I was delighted to learn about after I already owned the pair. Less than fifty clams .... not bad

Nice? Nice? You think those coins are nice?!

The first one is phat above comment. The pie wedge out of it does not deter from the coin and only adds to its character. The level of Greek artistry is right there in the boldest of ways, a beautifully executed portrait

Now lets talk about coin two.

The coin is absurd, and I absolutely NEED it for my collection, of the Carthaginian domain. If you ever want to make a trade you let me know, you here! Right here!! By the Gods thats phat!

Beyond that both coins are crap...

Two very nice coins, I really like the bust detail on the first one. I have to really look into starting to buy some Greek coins as soon as this dry spell ends.

As my own budget is near the break point the Himera will be up for grabs next month. I have been a bad boy this past month and something needs to go ..... once again. Time to cull the herd. The 'Dion' will stick around for awhile .... I hope !

Your Zeus Eleutherios (the liberator) is a very nice coin with a great portrait. I would love to have one.

The Himera is a little rough but still very nice, especially for the money.

This nymph, was known at Himera, and nowhere else. She was one of the NYMPHAI HIMERIAI [Naiad Nymphs] of the hot-water springs of the town of Himera in eastern Sicily. Hercules bathed there while passing along the coast. (lucky fella)

Nymphs are cool. I need some of those too.

Nymphs could be "Risky Business"..........
The famous painting of the Abduction of Hylas is my backround on Fbook
(much to Brunilda's consternation)
and the (almost ancient) early 70's song Fountain of Salmacis
by the band Genesis is still one of my favorites.
