I got these two thalers recently and could not find any information about how their edges should look like. NGC or Numista do not seem to have edge details such as the inscription or design. I have usually been able to find out edge information for thalers after 1830 in Numista. example GOTT MIT UNS on Prussian thalers.

Does anyone knows when the edge inscription first appear on German state coins ? Also if you have these coins , could you confirm the edge design ?

I believe both these coins are genuine but want to get confirmation.
Thanks

1793 A Prussia thaler

Actual weight:21.95g
specification: 22.27
Diameter : 37mm

1638 Salzburg Thaler

Actual weight: 28.75g
Recorded weight: 28.71g
Diameter : 41mm

Ring test appears to be ok and weaker than the 1793 Prussian thaler. Not sure if silver purity will change the ring sounds and I am unable to find the purity for this one.

I can't help with the German coin. With the Salzburg thaler the edge being blank is reassuring. I have a late 1600s double thaler(produced by a rolling mill) and that also has a blank edge.According to Denis R.Cooper "The art and craft of coin making" The first unsuccessful attempt to decorate the edges of coins was in 1555. Cooper isn't absolutely clear in his text but from my reading it looks like edging started to be successfully added to coins in the 1660s.Cooper notes the only extant edging machine from the 1600s is in Stolburg and is dated 1663( so you get a part answer to your question on when German states started decorating the edges) I know the Austrian Habsburgs did not start Rim edging(as Cooper refers to it) until the very late 1690s- early 1700s

I have no time to take a photo of my Prussia 1793A thaler but can provide you the data, diameter 37.0mm and 21.77 grams. The edge is the same as yours. Henry

Hi Henry, thank you for confirming the size, weight and the edge pattern of the Prussian coin.

Austrokiwi, great information about the edges of these pre 1800 thalers and for the reference of the Dennis R Cooper, much appreciated.

It is good to know the two coins are likely authentic.
