I recently started filling out a nickel book (two actually) and run into my own little dilemma. What do I do with the duplicates (or triplicates)? These aren't necessarily the most rare or best condition, but some are tough to throw back into circulation thinking that others may be needing it for their book. Do I leave it up to chance for those in need to find their own, or hang onto them for trade or giveaways?

Keep them for trade, you can get the nickel tubes to store them in and if you want get an empty nickel box from the bank to keep the tubes in.

Keep them for trade

Or do just as I do with other coins I have kept out for one reason or another and put them into 2x2's and hold onto them.

I'm fairly new to this, but here is my system. I keep a binder with 2x2s of my best specimen of each coin (year, mint mark, etc, ie a complete set). I then keep a box of duplicates in 2x2s by order of year for easy inventory. When I find a better specimen CRHing I replace the one in my binder and move the old one to the box. If a find is not better then my binder specimen, but I just can't let it go, then straight to the box it goes. Builds a nice collection of duplicates and the binder allows me to quickly reference my best coins for comparison.

When I get a coin in better grade than the one in an Album, the one from the Album goes into a 2x2 flip. Then in order, in one of those Whitman long cardboard boxes for 2x2's. I periodically check to see how many of those duplicates of each type are in those boxes. If sufficient enough, I start a new Album of whatever has accumulated for that. I presently have 9 of those boxes of duplicates. Doing this over the years I've also accumulated many, many duplicate Albums. For eample now up to 12 Mercury dime Albums.

Always keep my duplicates of all coins for trade or trade up later on. Or more often than not, a "throw in" to seal a deal on something else.

I have three young boys that share my collecting bug. So many dealers have been so very generous with them and me at shows, I have begun to give back by giving my culls and quaddruplicates to their friends to get them started in collecting or to other kids at shows.
