Today I went over to a local coin show, where a friend of mine told me that he knows a guy who is making a special trip to meet us, and he has "World" and "Ancient" coins. You guys know, know when someone says "ancient coins" your ears perk up.

I went and met the gentleman and he was very nice and very, educated in the area of said subjects. He had many medieval silver pieces, everything from Anglo-Saxon to Hephthalite. He has a large amount of hammered coinage and Roman denarii. There was also a very few expensive Greek Tetradrachms, that I could not afford in 3-4 coin show trips.

So I did bring my "main" collection binder, and this gentleman and I talked for nearly 3 hrs about all kinds of coins. One thing lead to another and we ended up making a trade. The piece that I spotted was something you just can't pass up, an opportunity that doesn't often present itself.

This piece I acquired cost me a very nice Otacilia Severa,an OK Philip Arab and a decent Julia Domna Venus Genetrix denarius and $80 USD. The coin is tone to a grey and black scheme and worn silly in antiquity and I still think I emerged the victor.

Phoenicia, Tyre
(North Israel, Judea mint)
AR Shekel c. 1st cent. BC
30.0 mm x 12.17 g
Obverse: Laureate Head of Melqart (Hercules) right.
Reverse: Eagle Standing on Prow; Punic letter between legs, KAIASULOU TYPOYIEPAS
Monograms and dated PKTH (worn) yr.129.= s. 3AD.

Sounds like you had an interest time with this collector. It's nice to meet face to face with another collector talks coin and do some trading. As far as I know I'm the only ancient coin collector in my area. Ras would be the next one about 4 1/2 hours from here. Your new coin is very nice. Congrats.

Yea it was nice to pick up one of the famous 30 pieces. The dealer also unloaded on me a huge box of auction catalogs. Going back to '77 reprinted gorgeous in 2002. And of bunch of Byzantine stuff too, more than enough to look at. The action catalogs are breathtaking and indebt.

I am glad you like the shekel.

Now I have both types of shekels that could be the "30 pieces" of silver.

The Tyre Shekel featuring Hercules and the Sidon Shekel featuring Tyche. This is another great day for ancient coin collecting.

A very nice coin indeed...and I don't quite know the value of it but I am sure its inflated since any coin that could be biblically related seems to acquire extra value (even if there's very little evidence that the story is a true one)

It does sound like you had to give a significant amount in trade for it, will you miss those coins and do you aim to replace them? If they held no real interest for you then you are certainly better off with one piece you are thrilled about.

Duk- your right. I traded higher grade Romans, ants and denarii. I think I made out very well, a shekel even in this condition would be $500-$600 dollars on a good day. Those coins I could replace on ebay in a few hours. As for an affordable whole shekel that I can afford this was the first I ever saw.

:) well it looks like you did the right thing then.

Personally I find it is always better to have one stunning piece than many OK pieces, to consolidate a few easily replaceable coins for one unobtainable one is a good idea in general.
