For those who like to have it all, and want it now, here is an instant gold collection form the 1980's...PCGS Style!

"Original Rattler Box of 20 - U.S. Gold Coins - $1, $2.5, $5, $10 and $20 Denominations PCGS OGH (1st Gen) (20 Coins)"

"An amazing box of 20 original Rattler gold coins, graded by PCGS, as purchased in the 1980s. While many collectors put together a box of 20, it is extremely rare to see a box from 25 years ago. Each coin is graded by PCGS in the original rattler first generation holders and even these holders are in pristine condition, as if they were graded yesterday. The coins are housed in a Rattler box, which predated the current-style blue/green boxes.

The coins. The box includes:

1889 Gold Dollar PCGS MS61
1915-S $2.5 Panama-Pacific PCGS MS-63
1904 Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS MS-62
1906 Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS MS-62
1909 Indian Quarter Eagle PCGS AU-58
1929 Indian Quarter Eagle PCGS MS-63
1886-S Liberty Half Eagle PCGS MS-62
1899 Liberty Half Eagle PCGS MS-60
1908 Indian Half Eagle PCGS MS-64
1915 Indian Half Eagle PCGS MS-61
1909-D Indian Half Eagle PCGS AU-58
1902-S Liberty Eagle PCGS MS-62
1907 Liberty Eagle PCGS AU-58
1907 Indian Eagle No Motto PCGS AU-58
1926 Indian Eagle PCGS MS-61
1932 Indian Eagle PCGS MS-62
1904 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS-63
1904 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS-63
1904 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS-62
1924 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS-63"

Have you put in a bid yet? Wish I could but wonder if it's really a "put-together" presentation?

I'm not really sure I'd care, as long as it looks the part. Not like you'd be keeping it whole simply because of the provenance, anyway. Wonder how much the "rattler" adjective will jack up the price?

I don't think it's completely put together if at all. There are consecutive serial numbers in the lot. Put together or not, it's a pretty dang cool box o' 20.

So who wants to guess what the final price will be?

The PCGS message boards lit up today with guesses on what would "gold bean" or what would upgrade a point if re-submitted. A lot of Kool-Aid drinkers there though.

I didn't notice the consecutive serial numbers at first glance. That does lend an air of legitimacy to the group. Still wonder why it wasn't submitted to CAC before the auction? Assumption would be they don't look like under-graded coins.

My guess would be a $24,000 hammer price for $26,400 out the door. A touch too rich for my blood.

do you think $26,500 would be worth it if you had the money to do so? I'm not sure what I would want to own this at that number but I do like it and I am in gold mode...

Lovely set of 20 classic gold coins ... the rattler provenance will most likely enhance the final price.

I'm not bidding.

Yes, $26k sounds like a fair retail price. Might be a little high if they are no upgrades in the bunch though.

This is what scares me. The winner, at their discretion of course, would spend more money to send to PCGS in hopes of upgraded holders. If that fails now the person is into the set for an even higher amount.

If I bought this set it would be going to CAC in hopes of landing a few gold beans. Seems gold beans generate more money than 1 point higher graded new slabs. And yes, this is strictly from a monetary perspective.

Thanks for the "Wishing Well" link to this....
Beautiful set, I would leave them in and CAC them as well. I'm sure many know here but how old are these slabs. We have a few but have never known the years these were slabbed in.
