So is this where the lamination peel came off before the coin was struck? I've still so much to learn...
I do also note that somewhere along its 77 years it took a nasty hit right near the lamination, but I feel as if that was PMD. I would appreciate all opinions here, thanks.

I would say it happened post strike. Remember the layer(s) that peeled away are not very thick at all.

Looking at the rim might help. If it is bulged out then it would be PMD. If not then it might be a struck through or lamination.
