This coin is 18 mm and .95 gram. The scan is not good, but on the coin you can read 1712 and mintmark AA. I assume this is a 1712 15 deniers as listed in RedBook under Billon Coinage. Thoughts?

I am by no means an expert, but IMHO you do have an example of a French colonial. The "...1712 LVD VIIII F..." of the obverse seems to match up with what is in RedBook. Also the "...I ERS AA PIEC..." and basic design of the reverse also matches up.

Where did you get this beat up beauty? Tell me you got this out of pawn shop junk bin and will post you some dancing fruit in celebration.

Your coin is a 15 Denier...but...not one struck specifically for colonial use ( most experts believe they did circulate). Rotate the reverse 180 degrees and you see the M mintmark for Toulous. AA for Metz. Neat coin!

So you are saying it was minted at Metz, but not for colonial use?

Sorry if my response is confusing. I think it could have circulated in the area of Quebec , Louisiana or the Caribbean. It is almost impossible to say for sure where it circulated. Read this it explains a lot. http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/Col...h.intro.html
