Did anyone ordered one? Did the pic release in the other forum change your mind one way or the other?
I ordered some before seeing the picture. I ordered it because it is first of the series but didn't think much of it. Now that I see the picture, I am glad I did ordered some

The image posted in the other forum definitely shows the detail of the new dinosaur coin - it looks great. It is definitely a vast improvement on the "artist's depiction" shown on the RCM web site. The coin should prove to be popular with many collectors. It's not my "cup of tea" however, so I won't be placing an order for it.

I have to admit, the actual picture of the coin looks amazing compared to the website. However, I'm still on the fence to pull the trigger. As someone stated, this is the first of a new series. Everything the mint is doing is a first in a series.

Haven't ordered one, but just pulled up the pic of it. The actual photo looks 300 times better than the picture on the mint website. I can now see why people were interested in getting one. I won't be buying one, because it wouldn't match my other coins themes, but I wouldn't be upset if I received one as a gift. Now I'm curious as to what other creatures they will have in the series.

The coin fits my themes, and even the RCM picture was good, so I bought it. Got the Allegory too (and the subscriptions)... And now from the posted real pictures I see that the coins are amazing!

Are we talking about this coin, or is there another one they've announced/put out since? Speaking of the bathygnathus coin, it's a nice enough design and all, but a couple of things bother me about it. It isn't, technically, a "dinosaur". Bathygnathus was a species of sphenacodontid, a class of reptile that lived before the time of the dinosaurs and are completely unrelated to them. They could call this coin part of the "Canadian Crocodiles" series and be just as inaccurate, from a biological point of view. I realize that yes, it's a big, scary lizardlike thing, just like a dinosaur, but to palaeo buffs (and I assume this coin is aimed at palaeo buffs), this sort of nitpicky detail is important, and getting it wrong just gets them mad - and less willing to buy the coins. Second, the design depicted is extremely conjectural, even by palaeontological standards. All we know of this species is a single piece of a single jawbone. Even just the head reconstruction, shown on the Wikipedia page, is labelled "very speculative". We certainly don't know that bathygnathus was one of the sphenacodontid species that had the spectacular "sailback" that was a prominent feature of several other known species alive at that time. What we can say for sure is that, in a hundred years time, people will see this coin and laugh at it: "Surely they knew that bathygnathus didn't look like that?".
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

No, I won't be buying this coin.
I agree the detail on it looks great, but this theme (another first in a series) does not fit in with my collection.
Also, after Sap's clarification that the Bathygnathus was not even a real dinosaur makes it less desirable.
And what about those BIG upper fangs? Perhaps this is a Bathygnathus Vampireorealous!

Quote: NuMoosematist: you forgot to link it to crown corporation and how that would make it less attractive :)- DOH! You're right Lostwords! Thanks for reminding me. Let me just say that a Crown Corporation should at least get their facts straight, especially when it concerns Dinosaurs, who often run these kinds of institutions.

If this were a $20/20 or a bronze or cupronickel coin for $34.95, I would buy it, regardless... cool coin, especially for kids... one per household causes a problem if you're buying for more than one kid though...
