I have seen several of these Liberia silver dollars with the Morgan obverse. Many of them are highly toned. What causes these in particular to have vibrant toning over a regular coin?
Differing types of silver coins do tone differently. I suspect it's a combination of the particular Mint wash, and the surfaces as struck by the different dies. The alloy is essentially the same; the differences have to be a function of the process.
I've always noted how you could pick a Trade dollar out of a pile of Morgans of the same date from across the room; they seem to tone much more darkly.
Many different factors will effect the rate/type of toning. I believe a lot of it has to do with the strike (die pressure), slight variations in the metal composition and (of course) environmental exposure.
