Just wondering in general, if you had a coin with a small stain or dot (for example the size of a pin head) vs a coin with no stain or dot but a noticible scratch, what hurts grading worse? Better off with the perfect coin with a stain/dot, or better off with a small scratch? Opinions? Thanks!

I know (me personally, grading aside) I would rather look at a stain free coin in my collection, even if it had a slight scratch. Just not sure if grading system would agree.

Untimately, the choice rests with the buyer.
Eye appeal can play it's part in the decision to buy.

In my opinion, if the amount of detracting value of a stain verses a scratch is equal,
I would always take the stained coin and leave the scratched one.

It depends. I would have to see the stained and scratched coin together, letting the stronger overall eye appeal win.

That is usually what it comes down to for me, comparing side by side. I didn't have a particular pair of coins I was asking about, just a generalization. I find myself keeping the scratch vs the stain most often as with the naked eye the scratch isn't visible but the stain always seems to jump out.

I think i'd take a small stain over a scratch, however not enough information to make a decision. what if the scratch was across the face or the stain was along the rim? I think it has to be decided based on looking at each coin and the location of the issue. How much does it take away from the eye appeal is usually my judging factor.

Distractions are distractions, it doesn't matter if it's a hit, scratch or a stain. The only thing that matters is the severity. For AU and up coins the order is generally: eye appeal>luster>distractions

For me a stain is better than a scratch, but not by much.

BadThad... the general order lol... you and I both know how ambiguous that one is! As far as distractions, I don't feel distractions are distractions when you take into account mint vs. post-mint damage. You can have the prettiest scratched or stained coin in the world but technically it's not going to grade higher (if at all) than the unc coin with a hit on the cheek of the dead president. Would you agree? I'd like for you to disagree because I just passed on a beautiful toned proof for this reason alone!

Hehe... I guess the correct answer is the beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;)

Agree, distractions are distractions, it doesn't matter where they originated.

That's a tough call but keep in mind what John1 said about eye appeal. You have to look at which coin has the better eye appeal and make the call that way.
