I'm not too familiar with the filled D yet and have looked at pics that appear both more and less filled than the one in question being referred to as a filled D. Best pics I could get with my loupe and iPhone. Think ill be picking up a USB scope in the near future ;)

What causes this is that the post on the die that would have made the cent of the mint mark is chipping off. When the whole post is gone the mint mark is completely full and often higher than the mint mark. The die is probaby in the LDS die state and will continue to be used for some time now after you coin was struck.

Good question though. May think they are filled with grease. But a filled die would remove the entire mint mark, and not just the center.
