Right now, the only thing that they can and WILL concentrate on, is the success of the dollar coin, but after that, they may not only be willing to help me with $200 and $500 bills, but also with getting ALL vending machines to accept $2 bills and accept and dispense halves as needed. For all who are interested, here are the email converseayions:

ME:

I just checked the DCA website and noticed that the COINS Act has been reintroduced. I just had one question for you. I know that right now, the DCA's main goal is passing legislation to end the $1 bill and replace it with the dollar coin, but like I may have told you, I've had people at major store chains, such as Walmart tell me that, although their self checkout machines can accepted dollar coins, halves and $2 bills, they can only give out pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters for coins, and $1, $5, $10 ,$20 and $50 bills in change, so I was wondering, once the COINS Act does pass, and vendors and self checkout companies have to upgrade to dispense dollar coins, could you people at the Dollar Coin Alliance try to get the vending industry to upgrade to accept $2 bills, and to both accept and dispense half dollar coins as needed, so as dollar coins? And also, could you try to get all self checkout machine companies to dispense $2 bills as needed, and to accept and dispense halves as needed? I know there are only five coin slots in most cash registers, but there are some that have eight coin slots, and some can even be converted from five to six coin slots. (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half, dollar (or if we get rid of the penny, we could have cash drawers set up, nickel, dime, quarter, half, dollar)

Now, while I am a huge fan of the dollar coin and the $2 bill, I also like the half dollar, so, do you think that the 50 cent denomination may have a shot at general circulation again? A lot of people are telling me that, vendors and self checkout companies will not upgrade for halves because its not worth it, but do you think once the dollar coin and $2 bill are a success, that maybe the half can be pushed? I just thought it would be logical for stores with self checkouts to be updated to both accept and dispense halves while doing so for dollar coins and $2 bills, because they could kill three birds with one stone. If machines give out halves, along with dollar coins and $2 bills, all three denominations will circulate. So, do you think I could get a little help there?

P.S. I'm writing to my Congress people now, in support of the COINS Act.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

DCA:

Thanks for writing in support if the Coins Act. Good question on coin machines, I suspect that they will have to upgrade to give $1 coin change if the bill passes. With respect to your other questions, we are singularly focused and constituted on the dollar coin, and will not/can not pursue other currency issues.

That may change way down the road, but not now.

My best,

ME:

(I was misunderstood)

You may have misunderstood me. I meant, could the DCA help get halves and $2 bills back into circulation with vending and self checkout upgrades to all machines "while" upgrading to give dollar coins in change? I meant "after" the COINS Act passed, and the $1 bills started getting phased out, and since some machines may have to be upgraded to accept and dispense dollar coins as needed, while the self checkout companies and vendors are upgrading to accept and dispense dollar coins, then could you try to get them to do the same thing for halves and $2 bills? I just figured, if vendors and self checkout businesses had to make certain upgrades for dollar coins, maybe they could do the same for $2 bills and halves at the same time. Thanks for your consideration.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

DCA:

We'll see. First things first!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And so, there you have it. Maybe not right away, but in a few years time, maybe I will score a victory for circulating halves, $2 bills, newly issued $200 bills and reissued $500 bills. Criticize all you want, but I think I'm on the right track here. Now that I have a whole group that may come to my side and help.

I would say that $2 bills would save the government money by printing 50% $1 bills and issuing $2 bills, because it cost the same to make all notes unless more time is spent to design them. If I was in the business of making coin machines I'd be all for this! That company would make some serious chaange and jobs t

CoinProfessor,

Yeah, I always figured we should make about one third to one half of all of the $1 bills and quarters we make, and make about one half to two thirds of $2 bills and halves, and just let the $2 bills and halves slowly fill in the gaps, and begin to circulate again, due to demand. Thats if we keep the $1 bill, and if we do, I would much rather see the $1 and $2 bills redesigned with every currency redesign, even if without any new security features added, just to keep all denominations uniformed so that they look like they are all in the same family and American. As for the half, like we discussed, I'd prefer to leave the Kennedy front alone and redesign the back four times next year for the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half (1964-2014), then redesign the back one more time in 2015 for a final design, or at least until the 100th anniversary of the Kennedy half, if halves are even around by then.

How does that hippy motto you see on bumper stickers go?

Think globally, act locally.

Just like texting while driving and gun control laws there have been the same laws on the books for 75 years that can be applied to the instances and we don't need any more, we just need enforcement.

If you want more half dollars, dollar coins, and $2 bills in circulation then by all means spend them. Act locally. That is what I do as it helps reduce the amount I have to dump back at the bank. I have never been told no you can't spend those (but have been told by a clerk they have to ask their manager if they can take that many)

Moral of the story? No need for new laws to force the public to use them, all interested parties should just go out and proactively do it and you never know how many other people will automatically join in.

i already do what I can by spending quite alot of half dollars at local 7/11's etc and the 500 dollar bill would be a great idea to bring back less bills to carry when dumping

But the 500 dollar bill would be the number one counterfeit bill.
