Not much of this coin left to work with but can you shed any light on the reverse? Is it pi? Something else? I don't even know which way is up.

It's coin F10 from My First Dirties thread.

The coin is Byzantine and the reverse is upside down.

Guess I'm still asleep, it didn't even dawn on me that it was early Byzantine. I believe you are right Nate. OK, I'm going back to sleep now.

Could also be Phocas. Most likely Maurice Tiberius...

I can't seem to wake up today. Here is a site that I think will answer your question. http://www.beastcoins.com/Byzantine/Byzantine.htm

Thanks! Good bookmark, will browse it as I try to ID some of my dirty coins and as I play GTE.

I can see now that the obverse lettering (among other things) should've shown me that this is not a Roman Imperial coin.

I just wanted to point out thats a cool coin. The bust is still intact and there is some legend I would say better than most.

None of us has never looked at something and been stumped by something obvious. At first glance I thought 4th century looked about right.

That's an epsilon, so it's a pentanummium (E = 5). Rotate the reverse 90 degrees left.
Not enough there to say which ruler without leafing through Sear.
