It seems that the US Mint recently has put up a daily counter for the number of sets sold for Silver Eagle sets.

What do you think about a counter for all issues with unlimited or a countdown counter for items with a mintage cap?

Say that the Girl Scouts dollar is only up to 50K orders come December I would think there would be a huge spike in sales due to the future high increase in sales price on the secondary market. The last minute surge would help the mint profit wise as well as the organization (do they still get a cut)?

Or would it hurt sales as investors who see a high initial sales numbers would automatically write them off midyear if the numbers were too high?

The numbers for the comms really don't jump that much every week.

The only exception I can think of for the comms that I might like a counter on is the proof set because of low mintage.

Maybe next year's Baseball Hall of Fame coins might go at a very faster pace if there is some advertising or something but I don't know.

So I'd just check the weekly numbers and go from there but you should have plenty of time to pick up a very good quality coin from the mint and donate some money to a worthy charity.

Im not a fan of the idea personally. I dont really think it would do anything for sales as most of the commemoratives are something you either like or you dont. Every now and then you get the civil war one that appeals to civil war buffs or the buffalo one that appeals to Buffalo nickel lovers but for the most part youre kind of doing a set and enjoy them or you dont.

I personally hate the mint to demand products and the counter so naturally I dont want to see that expanded and especially not into more things that I collect.

I don't think a counter on the modern commemorative releases is necessary. The maximum authorized mintage is known before the coins go on sale and updated sales figures are published on a weekly basis. Also, as was already pointed out, the number sold each week does not advance dramatically for most issues once the first week or two of sales are complete.

Where are the weekly mintage numbers published?

I wonder if the week before sales close in speculators check those numbers and make a last minute surge for low mintage issues?
