The bidding on this coin is currently $900, auction ends tomorrow.

I thought I had a reasonable grasp of pricing and values for ASEs but now I'm puzzled.

PCGS CoinFacts lists a population of 371 MS70 ASEs (book price $850) and 333 MS70 'First Strikes'.

Recent auction prices for the 'regular' PCGS MS70 have been ~$440-$660 and for the First Strike 'variety' (eye roll) have been ~$480-$650.

You can buy a 2005 PCGS First Strike MS70 ASE on APMEX.com right now for $349.

What's the deal?

Well the heritage site only lists 38 as the pcgs population which may be why if people arent checking it out in the population guide.

Thats my best guess anyway

Well that's weird. I wonder why the Heritage information is wrong?

It looked like a glitch. If you type in the cert number you get 38 but coin facts and the pop report have 371 which I imagine heritage has access too

Oh, wait... 371 minus 38 equals 333. Hmm.

In the PCGS price guide there is no separate listing for the 'First Strike' coins, unlike the listings for later years.

Looking at the pop data on CoinFacts, before clicking on 'varieties' (for which there is one, the 'First Strike'), the population of MS70 = 371. Click on the First Strike variety and the population is 333.

Perhaps I wrongly assumed there were a total of 704 MS70s when instead there are just 371, 333 of which are First Strike and 38 of which are not First Strike?

If it's true that there are only 38 of the non-FirstStrike MS70s, it seems odd that 5 of those 38 were sold in March and April, just by CoinFacts records-- and that sales data is just from a few auction sites.

Still doesn't help me figure out why the coin currently up for auction at Heritage is going to bring double the price of those non-FirstStrikers sold in March and April.

Maybe there isn't a rational explanation, just market whim or random frenzy.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That's almost 50% more than one's ever gone for before at Heritage. And it's no more a 70 than I am. On the obverse there are two gouges on the robe, a discoloration mark next to the B and a hit on the Y in LIBERTY, and the reverse is worse. Big hits on ICA and the R in DOLLAR, a hit on the eagle's right wing and the rim at 9:00 is shredded.

Ludicrous.

Yes, you assumed wrongly. However, the Heritage data is mis-leading to say the least because it makes it appear only 38 MS70 pieces are in the Pop Reports when in fact it should be 371. First Strike, or in this case non-First Strike, a 70 is a 70 and the price here is driven up far beyond where a should be.

There a many things in this hobby I hope to explore in the future. Registry Madness is not one of them.

That one has surface spotting, but it's a durn sight closer to 70 than the Heritage coin. Still not a 70 to my mind.
