Coin is 38mm, 20+ grams, double dated 1948-1973. I got it in a large lot of junk world coins, and it looks silverish. Were base metal versions made?

I looked it up, and the ones made for circulation were silver too--0.7199 fine.

Not double dated, by the way. :) On 4 September 1948, Juliana became queen, so 1973 was when she had her Silver Jubilee.

Juliana was the queen of the Netherlands until 1980; she then abdicated* and her daughter Beatrix became queen. This year Beatrix stepped back* and her son Willem Alexander became king.

(* In NL it is normal for the king/queen to not be the head of state until s/he dies. Juliana for example died in 2004 ...)

Lovely coin, and a good first NL coin to join my world dollars/thalers/crowns collection!
