I really like the older copper coins--and that's a great example!

Sweden has been using Rikstaler until well the 1870's. It used to be divided into Skilling (non-decimal I suppose). So probably this 1/2 öre has nothing to do with the later (and present) decimal öre = 1/100 Krona?

Can someone shed some light on this? These 18th century currencies can be quite confusing.

Gwyde, öre is an old Swedish denomination. I've seen a 15 öre 1543. Also a 2 mark/16 öre 1543, which places the öres value to the mark. As for daler, 3½ mark was equal to 1 daler at the time. So it was 28 öre on the daler then. This changed throughout history.

Under Karl IX (1604-11) Sweden had to types of Daler. A daler was worth 4 mark, a rigsdaler was worth 6 mark. 1 mark was still 8 öre, so 1 daler = 48 öre

In 1664, 1 rigsdaler dropped to 52 öre. In 1681, to 64 öre. Then later 96 öre.

In the mid-1800s, one daler was worth four rigsdaler. And one öre was 1/100 of one rigsdaler. Then at the reform in 1873, rigsdaler was exchanged with krona.

Thanks, it's increasingly clear that decimal currencies were the exception rather than the rule the 19th century.
