I read through the one coin from each year thread which was the inspiration for this purchase. I really like the look of the Early Modern European coins. Given that I don't know anything about the value I chose an inexpensive coin that I like.

How did I do? (I like it regardless)

Happy Father's Day to all the other dads out there.

Very nice!! I started looking for some similarly cheap medieval silver after seeing this thread, but no luck yet...

I'm not knowledgeable on those coins, but I personally think that a coin of that age is worth 15 bucks if it's something you like.

I personally think it's a lovely coin.
Not sure if I would've bought it at that price (especially since I've found loads of similarly old or older coins at lower prices); but it's certainly a lovely coin (to me anyway).

Thanks for the responses. Does anyone know the best sources of information regarding the older European coins? Are there any publications that provide valuations?

This coin I thought was in fairly good condition although it has centering problems mainly effecting the crown on the obverse. I'm more interested in the 1/4 thaler and thaler coins because of the size and content but they are more expensive so I'd like to invest more time before money.

I think 1601-1700 is the very earliest Krause catalog, so you should be able to find your coin in there.

Looking to buy a Krause catalog. In the meantime I found NGC which seems to use Krause as a refernce (not sure which issue date though): http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...oinid=286386

Also found this Davenport reference which is pretty interesting: http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/S...enport_1-999

I bought a 1622 1/4 thalar coin to match the 3 groschen coin. I'm starting to really like these old coins. http://www.ebay.com/itm/32113121714....m1497.l2649

Started looking into the cost of potential future purchases for the 1622 1/2 thaler and 1 thaler but the 1/2 thaler is just listed as "rare" and the 1 thaler is $3500 in VG8. So...I'm looking to pick up the 1622 solidus coin instead which I should be able to find for a few bucks.
