It looks right and weighs right, but since there are only 4 in existence and it is a high grade, I'm skeptical. Close comparison with an authentic one in cgb.fr archives shows slight differences in the Marseille mintmark and in the form and placement of the mintmaster's VR mark.

I'm not qualified to say whether it's authentic or not, but listed mintage for 1814MA is 99,000. Where are you getting 4 from?

My 2007 Le Franc records 4, ranging from VF to AU, in recent sales. There are undoubtedly more they report, especially in lower grades. This is not low grade though, and if authentic it's a 500-1000 euro coin.

You must be misreading something, as there have been a lot more than 4 of these in VF or better that have been auctioned or are currently up for sale. And value for this coin with damage and hairlines is not likely to be more than about 200 euros.

This one has some rim damage too, but no hairlines, unsold so far at 250 euro: http://www.ma-shops.com/dumez/item....r=EUR&save=1

and

This high grade one with minor rim dings, sold for 450 euro against an estimate of 650: http://www.monnaiesdantan.com/vso11...te-p1168.htm

PS: The coin appears completely genuine.

No misreading, though Le Franc 7's count of 4 is only what has been reported to them. More like a population report than an exact count but still low enough for them to note that this is a rare coin.

I still don't like the form of the MA mintmark so I won't be chasing you at the end of the auction. I think it's a real 5F that's been doctored. Compare the MA with this, which is about the same grade. http://www.cgb.fr/5-francs-louis-xv...49453,a.html

The cracked planchet is another oddity. It doesn't appear cracked through, and I haven't seen a lot of French coins this late with cracking like this, which look almost like solder lines.

Frankly, I don't know that type (although I'm French, but heh ... I collect spanish coins :P) - but I don't like the overall look.
Cracks not going through, strange patina, strange color (that's supposed to be silver ?) ... maybe it was cleaned / artificially patinated ?
