Those of you who know me understand my affinity for Barber coins in general and dimes in particular. Just today I did an upgrade.

In my years' long search I had to settle for coins in slabs. A total of seven.

I just broke out a 1900-O in XF-45 and put it into the album.
[It was NOT a pretty sight! Slam!! Bang!]
Five more remain.
The only one which will remain in its prison is the 1895-O in AU-58.
I have my reasons. Makes dealers drool! Original pedigree from Heritage Auctions.

Look, each of we collectors must decide for ourselves how to collect and how to display.

OK, here is the [and now my] criteria: [From a dealer]

"I have no problem with six of these [grade], but do NOT break out the 95-O."

I WANT THEM IN THE ALBUM!

I figure: dealers are lining up to buy the album and they do NOT need a TPG to make
a decision for them.
That is good enough for me.

NOT FOR SALE at present!

Do you think it is more valuable to have a full set of something rather than selling them off piece by piece?

Panzaldi - Just because some people like their coins in slabs does not mean they aren't collectors. The coin is still there regardless of it's protection.

If most of my set was raw, MV, I would have no problem cracking out the last ones. And yes you are right. That 95-O makes people drool, and not just dealers. There are quite a few "collectors" (in quotes because it is in a slab....) that would love to have a 58 95-O. My question to you, do you feel it is accurately graded? We all know their opinion, but I would like to hear yours.

In general parting it out will get you the most money. Lower value common things can do better in a set in terms of time and effort you have to put in.

Those pictures arent good enough for me to tell if its the same coin or not. That said cracking high end coins and resubmitting them almost always results in the owner losing value

panzaldi,
Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I turned 62 last month so I'm old school as well.

buddy16cat,
Not necessarily more valuable but much easier to sell.

With these dimes the majority of dealers have never seen
a complete set this nice. Plus, I display them at the New Hampshire Coin Expo.
They will eventually be sold as a complete set.

Now, if I had spent 26 years assembling a set of proof Franklin halves the story would be different. In that case selling individually may be better.

LogPotato,

I'll let you make the call.

All three examples passed through Heritage auctions.
Prices quoted include buyer's premium.
All three are PCGS graded AU-58.

Slabbed-Or-Free.--Barber-Dimes.
Sold for 4,456.25 in Aug., 2011

I paid between 4 and 5K for mine. My most valuable coin.

jack heckel,
I'm happy I read this AFTER I broke out the six.
Last night I awoke with the tips of my index finger and
thumb throbbing. Must have hit them with the hammer.
One of the dimes went missing overnight, but I found it. It has dropped from an AU-58 to an AU-57 1/2!

Folks, thank you for the input.

Sorry for getting back to this one so late. I really can't detect any rub on your example. Although the pictures aren't the great. I went back to the archive, and Heritage's scans were even worse. I would love to see some updated photos of it. It also looks relatively mark free.
