1916 D Merc Valued Member United States 459 Posts	Posted 06/16/2013 11:59 pm Back in 2004, my grandmother passed away, she ran the register at a school cafeteria in her earlier days, and she would pull the odd, interesting coins that the kids purchased their lunches with. One of those coins being a 1900-S Morgan dollar, which I inherited when she passed away. This was a time when I was a novice collector, pulling any neat coin I found (Ahh, the good times) But now, I have discovered the world of VAMs and have further expanded my interest in coin collecting. With this new-found interest, I discovered that the 1900-S Morgan is either a R-5 VAM-19 or a R-4 VAM 16. And I was just wondering what premium a variety with a rarity of 4 would command. Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 06/17/2013 12:07 pm I don't know about VAMs, but in early copper and bust halves R-4's seldom bring much if any premium unless it is a "popular" variety. R-5's do normally bring a premium but not all R-5's are created equal. Some are "easy" R-5's and bring a modest premium, some a "popular" and/or "hard" R-5's which will bring a high premium. NathanASE Pillar of the Community United States 1511 Posts	Posted 06/17/2013 12:24 pm I'm pretty new to VAMS myself so I could very well be wrong.. but I believe that the grade and popularity has a lot to do with it... For instance I found out my 1878 8tf (raw AU) is a hot-50 VAM-8... But being in AU would bring no premium, while if it were a MS-65 it would. I'm pretty sure most of the more common VAMS, especially in lower grades hold no premium. I'm not sure how the rarity scale figures into the equation. I know that the VAMS with extreme "wow" factor bring good premiums, such as "scarface" or even "hot lips".... AKA ones that can be easily identified by naked eye. But again, I could be wrong so I'm curious to hear more experienced opinions on the topic! On a side note.. That's pretty cool to have gotten a Morgan from a school lunch line!! Neat story!
