In spite of a possible theft along the way and some other obstacles, I have completed my Dansco 7070 album except for the gold page. The minimum grade I tried to obtain in the older types was VF-20, although there is a VG-8 Classic Head Large Cent; however, none of the early coppers have any porosity or other problems. Information that might be useful to others who are thinking about making a run at completing one of these things, I spent approximately $4,500 total. I used Coin Values magazine to value my maximum bids after grading the coins I wanted. Other than the coins I received from my Mother's collection all the coins were bought at Heritage Auctions, one or two from Harlan Beck, a few from my local coin store, and the vast majority of the remainder from ebay. Having all these coins in an album is kind of a neat way to display them. Before I returned it to my bank vault I couldn't stop looking at it. There are some things I will change in the future. I would like to upgrade the Barber series and of course I will replace the Montana Quarter with the Oklahoma Quarter when it is released. I have made a poor attempt to photograph the whole album, both obverse and reverse. I had lots of problems with exposure as there are dark coins next to lighter colored or silver tones. Hope you will believe me when I say it is much nicer looking in person than these pictures and I am happy to be the owner. Peace. That is amazing. I'm not as big on collecting US coins and that's the first time I have looked a completed set Way to Go!

All I can say is "Awesome"! No wonder you couldn't stop looking at them. Great job and a great motivation to us still trying to complete the set.

Very nice.
It would be hard for me to put them in a safe deposit box.
When I get to the point where my collection is worth enough to worry about I think I'll spend the money to somehow secure them at home.

One other item I forgot to mention. Around eight of these coins were purchased in slabs. Trading on information I picked up from some of you on this forum, I used a Dremmel Tool with a small saw blade to crack them out. I saved all of the labels and bar codes from the slabs and taped them to the inside of the back cover of the album. Thanks.

Nice! Thanks for sharing. Interesting story about how you put it together too. There's no point in going to the safe deposit box if it'll fit under your pillow. But then again you would have to carry it around in your arms all day.

I have to congratulate you as well, maybe one of these days I will be able to join the ranks of all the elite that have finished this darn collectible nightmare that gives me so much joy when I get another coin that will fill another hole. I have 24 more coins to go and that is including the Gold page. Out of all the coins I think the classic head large cent in au-50 no problem condition (the minimum I am trying to put in here) is going to be one of the hardest coins to find in the whole album

As you probably know Bryan, the Classic Head Large Cents were struck using a softer mix of copper that wore out quickly and corroded easily. There are some AU "Details" slabbed Classic Head LCs out there, but a problem free AU is going to be expensive (from $3500 to $10,000) and rare. My 1814 CHLC was one of the slabbed coins I bought and I think it is very conservatively graded at VG-8. More importantly to me it has no corrison or pitting with original surfaces and, while not cheap, was the best I could afford. When you find one I would love to see some pictures. I completed the majority of my album in around three years, but there is much to be said for using patience, spreading the cost out over time, and going for AU or better pieces only. What a beautiful set that would be! Good luck!
Colin
