As most of you probably know I am assembling a type set of
Liberty Seated coinage. In an earlier post I declared a milestone was achieved only to be informed of a variety I was unaware of, namely the 1859 Philadelphia Mint issue with hollow stars. Well, I just got one so now I actually do have all of the obverse varieties of these
Half Dimes.
The types as listed in the
Red Book are:
Variety 1 No stars on obverse 1837-38

Variety 2a Stars on obverse, no drapery at elbow 1837-40

Variety 2b Stars on obverse, drapery at elbow 1840-
1842 NGC AU-58 no picture yet
Variety 3 Arrows at date 1853-55

Variety 2 Resumed, with weight standard of Variety 3 1856-59

Transitional variety, hollow stars 1859 Philadelphia Mint only

Variety 4 Legend on obverse

There are two major reverse varieties:
Variety 1 Legend on reverse 1837-1859

Variety 2 Legend on obverse 1860-1873

All of the above is essentially a complete type set of the major varieties of the Liberty
Seated half dimes unless one considers the mint mark locations of the Legend on obverse type. Below the bow 1860-69 & 1872-73 and above the bow 1870-72. I'll probably get one of each eventually just because. I have the two 20 cent pieces I needed so now I have two of the six denominations completed.
