Sorry if this is a dumb question; I have seen a few places (on coin websites and in ebay listings, etc) that any combination of 90% silver coins totaling $1.20 in face value will be 1 oz (a regular ounce NOT a troy ounce) of weight.

How is that possible? I would think that say, two pre-1964 halves and 2 Mercury dimes would way more than 12 Mercury dimes... etc. Am I missing something? It's also possible that I am misinterpreting what I have read.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

two pre-1965 halves and 2 Mercury dimes is 0.87 ASW
twelve Mercury dimes is also 0.87 ASW

Actually I heard somewhere that a morgan/peace dollar would weigh more than any other combination of 1 dollar face. Not much (like 0.01 grams I think, correct me if I'm wrong). But 10 silver dimes will weigh aproximently as much as two silver halfs. And so would any other combination of pre 1965 silver US coins.

First things first, precious metals are ALWAYS weighed in Troy Ounces. Using Avoirdupois Ounces is a good way to get shorted out of silver value and it just adds confusion to the situation.

Dimes, quarters, and half dollars all have the equivalent silver weight per dollar unit. In other words, ten dimes equals four quarters equals two half dollars. Uncirculated minor coinage will contain 0.7234 troy ounces of silver per dollar while an uncirculated silver dollar is slightly higher at 0.7734 troy ounces. When dealing with average circ silver(no culls), the general assumption is that one dollar face value will contain 0.715 troy ounces and these lots typically trade in multiples of face value(currently ~18x face).

according to what I have read online:
a Morgan dollar contains 24.057 grams of silver
a Peace dollar contains 24.03 grams of silver
a pre-1965 half dollar contains 11.25 grams of silver
a pre-1965 dime contains 2.25 grams of silver

so 10 dimes or 2 half dollars would weigh 22.5 grams, just under a Morgan or Peace dollar.
