Have been left a gold sovereign dated 1871 it has a shield on the reverse and just below the shield is a Laurel which has just below it the letter s . the coin is in exceptional condition .What would be the value of this coin for insurance

The letter S means that it was minted in Sydney, Australia.

Based on today's gold prices, the gold content of the coin is worth £206. It could be worth a fair bit more depending on what condition it is in. But we would need some pictures to determine that.

Also, do not clean it in any way, as that would reduce it's value to only that of the gold content.

Even in worn condition, 1871 Sydney shield sovereigns ought to be worth more than their gold content to a collector. How much more depends on condition; some nice clear pictures of your actual coin can help determine this. Here's the NGC database listing.

There are two varieties of this coin, depending on whether the designer's initials are "raised" or "incuse"; but since this variation does not affect value, there's no particular need for a closeup of the queen's neck, unless you're interested in knowing this detail yourself.
