I've just been reminded of this:

Gun-Money

by a comment in another thread, and it's a coin that I've never researched properly. It's the only one I've ever handled so many of my conclusions are probably wrong.
My ideas so far are that it's a Gun Money large shilling, December 1689. 32.5mm, 12gr.

If I'm right so far, can anyone explain the markings. Are they cancellation marks?

Thanks,
Bob

I was curious about "gun money" so Googled the term. Interesting. But The Wikipedia article says there should be a month date also on the coin, and since James lost the war none were redeemed for silver?
It also said those coins continued to circulate after that war but at a lesser value, so maybe your mark means something else?
Of course Wikipedia is a marginal source of information at best since anyone can post anything they choose to on any given subject.

It's not a "cancellation" mark; as Wikipedia says, these coins were never redeemed or cancelled; any officially pulled from circulation after 1696 would be withdrawn and melted down, not mutilated like this. No, this is some kind of unofficial marking, for later use as a token or for some other now-forgotten purpose.

What's left of the month-date can still be seen, above the A of FRA on the reverse. I think it's "Dec."?
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
