I have lots of banks around me and I would like to know which I should get boxes of coins to look through from and which to not get coins from. Thanks for the help in advance guys! I have fifth third bank. Wells Fargo. Bank of America. Chase. Florida bank.

According to the radio advertisement I heard, it's "The Bank of Free Silver" of course.
Truthfully, there is no majic bank that delivers the goods...it's all random, and the bank that gives you the least amount of hassle providing coin to search for your hobby, will be that best bank.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

It is true. I opened up a few accounts with tiny amounts at different banks and credit unions so that I could try them out with coin hunting, and ended up closing 75% of those because I found that either the results were no different than the bank I do all of my normal banking needs with, or the employees were just as rude as anywhere else I don't visit for coin collecting needs. In either case, it wasn't worth it to keep those accounts. I will say that I occasionally have a bit better luck at one or two banks over others, and I will focus my efforts and get coins from those banks. But it isn't a permanent thing, just a streak, and eventually I have to move to a different bank to try my luck. My advice is if you are finding the coins you want in boxes from one bank, feel free to get more boxes and hope the streak continues. If you find that you are not finding ANY coins in a box that interest you, than try a new bank... not for the sole sake of increasing the number of keepers you find, but more to keep the hobby fun. And finally, unless you are 100% sure that you will be getting boxes of coins that are filled with coins that are keepers from ONE particular bank location, just don't go to the bank IF the staff are unfriendly and uncooperative. It is not worth it to argue with the staff to get boxes/accept boxes of searched coins, pay a price to order boxes, or have the manager of that location speak to other managers or regional managers about your hobby and turn other branches against you too. I like to think that for every rude teller I've run across and decided not to bother with again, that Karma then sets aside a few keeper coins in a roll that I will run across at a different bank as a reward.

I found a credit union that consistently gives me good pennies but they are kind of becoming a PITA about it. I've only gone there two or three times and gotten $5 worth of pennies each time but the last time the teller was like "Oh there's usually a fee" and I said "I have an account" and he asked "is it a business account?" to which I responded "no" and he hesitated for a second but then said "Oh okay" and gave me the pennies. What the heck? Seriously is $5 worth of pennies that big of a deal? I don't want to lose this place because the copper and Wheat penny ratio I'm getting is very good...

Isn't the company that services the bank more important? For example, I have found the three banks I use all use Loomis. Since the boxes come from the same source,I have found there not to be any difference.

Most banks get all of their coin from the same vault, just delivered by a different carrier.
If you are looking for boxes be prepared for seeing all of the same coins over and over no matter where you dump and where you pick up.
If you are going to open numerous accounts and have them hold your money with the minimum balance I would suggest you go with the banks that have the lowest minimum balance no fee accounts and the ones that don't charge you for ordering boxes.
Banks and credit unions who reroll their own coins seem to be stingy even to account holders in the amount of rolls they give out.
I went with a coworker to his bank (PNC) on day at lunch to see if I could score some rolls and they would only give him $5 in cents.

Quote: Truthfully, there is no majic bank that delivers the goods...it's all random, and the bank that gives you the least amount of hassle providing coin to search for your hobby, will be that best bank. I have a few accounts at different banks in town. Some personal and 1 company account. I went to 2 different branches of the same personal bank to pick up boxes of Nickels yesterday and received the same type wrapped boxes. I think they are Garda. They also contained almost entirely 2012's. So today I went to the 3rd branch of the same bank and I received a box with String and Son's wrapped coins. I thought it was very odd for the same bank in the same town to have 2 different wrappers. I tell that story to encourage you to visit as many different branches of the banks that you can. Even if you need to travel a few extra miles. The tellers are different at each bank. I routinely have difficulty at a branch of my company bank that is closest to my house. They even gave me a hard time about depositing bank wrapped coin. I received a $100 box of 2012 Nickels and decided to deposit it rather than open it up an take it to the coin counter. That particular branch almost didn't accept it. I had to remind them that it was the same as a $100 bill. The manager had to get involved. I have had good luck and a couple of BofA banks. Try to find a branch that has merchant tellers. They will be accustomed to dealing with large amounts of change. Good luck to you.

Wow I always read such crazy stories about being rejected... I guess I am lucky, I go to 18 different banks and always get what I am looking for... 1st bank(a colorado bank), wells fargo, US bank, TCF, Academy, and Bank of the West(several branches of each one)..... I sometimes drop into a chase bank but find they are VERY snooty about giving out coins.... Also let me mention that I only have an account at US bank and TCF(TCF lets me dump coins for free only if I have an account there) But I have standing orders of coins at most of the other banks and I don't even have an account at them, they just order the same boxes of coins week after week for me....I don't order coin at 1st bank but that's cause I don't need to, I can go in and get 10 boxes of nickels if I want or 2 boxes of halves(though I have to call ahead 20 minutes or so if I go to one inside a grocery store but not a free standing one)... One piece of advice I can give is: BRING DOUGHNUTS EVERY OTHER WEEK OR SO!! a three dollar box of doughnuts from the grocery store not only makes them happy but marks you as a great person who is very nice. This can soften even the grumpiest of tellers in my experience. Just remember part of getting good customer service is being a good customer and those boxes are heavy especially for those cute little ladies working behind the desk. Good luck everyone :)

DenverNRG, Congrats on the great working relationship you have with your banks. I agree with taking in treats. I normally take M&M's.

I would totally do that but the credit union I'm talking about has this weird system where the tellers are in a back room and you have to put your money and paperwork in a chute that goes to them and they send your stuff back through the chute! If you need to talk to them you have to do so over videophones!

Yeah, even for NY it's pretty weird. Sometimes the guy has to come out from the dungeon to bring me the change bc it's too much to put through the chute, I wonder if that's why he is starting to be a quasi-dick about it..

SilverMatt, Any bank specific information that could be helpful, will only be helpful if the person lives in your area. And to be honest, even that information will be relatively useless. The advice I would provide today for someone in Oklahoma would be different than advice 6 months ago. And 6 months different than a year (and so on). Even the national banks do things differently depending on where you live.
Since you have several options, my advice would be to stop at banks with several branches first. Set down and talk to a New Accounts Representative and let them know you would like to set up a hobby account and let them know you plan to buy or dump a lot of coin. Be up front and be specific about the amount and frequency. Make sure they understand you are only interested in an account if they can meet your needs. This is something I've learned through experience. Every time I've done this, my relationships with the tellers have been better. They never deteriorate to the awkward 'oh, its the coin guy again' feeling. Also, the account rep. can act as an advocate if someone starts talking about a coin fee or banning you from coin.
My last piece of advice; if they want you to set up a business account for a small monthly fee, I'd advise you to do it. This small 'loyalty' fee is worth the price for me. Many people here would disagree saying 'why pay for something you can get for free'. But the biggest obstacle to overcome is hassle. The hassle of changing banks. The hassle of finding new banks. The hassle of dealing with tellers and teller managers that want to run you off. The hassle of feeling you are causing problems. A business account with a $12 or $15 monthly fee is a small price to pay if you can avoid hassle.

I guess it depends on your motives. I am in this with the hope and expectation of making some small profit. I realize you are note going to spend 5 hours searching coins and strike gold so no need to break that news to me, lol.
I look at it like this is a hobby that I enjoy and that can ideally provide a small income which I will treat as separate from my normal income and use to either buy rarer coins or bulk silver or other investments. In that way I am essentially creating something from nothing. Before anyone tries to say this is not possible, I have already been doing it so I know that it is.
However, given that outlook, if you start committing to paying monthly fees to a bank to be able to get coin, that starts to get insane and may potentially eat up a chunk of your profits. If you don't have a ton of time to devote to this every month the bank fees could easily turn a +EV hobby into yet another monthly bill.
If this is not a profitable hobby for you already, and you are someone that is spending a couple hundred a month to buy rare coins anyways, then what the heck - what's another $15-30 a month if you are already going negative?
For me it defeats the whole point and thus does not make sense.
